What is holistic health and integrative nutrition?

Holistic health is an integrative wellness approach that views biology, psychology, environment, and spirituality as equally important and interconnected in one's experience of health. Haven Holistic Health practices awareness of this complexity and explores the unique combination of the mental, physical, spiritual, social, and emotional needs of our clients.

Similarly, Integrative Nutrition encompasses the many areas of our lives that impact our health and well-being, not just our nutrition. These include things like our environment, career, relationships, spirituality, social life, finances, education, and physical health. Integrative nutrition takes all of these non-nutritional components into account when determining what’s best for your health and diet.

Why is health coaching a worthwhile investment?

Research on health coaching outcomes indicate that health coaching can improve:

  • Blood pressure

  • Cholesterol

  • Glucose (blood sugar)

  • Triglycerides (blood fat)

  • Body weight

  • Cardiovascular fitness

  • Health-related quality of life,

thus reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, ADHD, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, chronic pain, hypertension, osteoporosis, and more.

The addition of a health coach to a treatment plan in a clinical setting has promise for helping to improve the overall outcome of the client's goals. The coach can supplement treatment with the processes and skills licensed by the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC).

'The primary aims of the study were to examine potential improvements in quality of life (QOL), including physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual functioning, as well as in depressive symptoms and perceived stress levels. Study results, which appeared in Mayo Clinic Proceedings in 2014, demonstrated significant improvements at 12 weeks in all areas — overall quality of life, the five domains of QOL, depressive symptoms and perceived stress levels.'

'Just as a sports coach can help an athlete develop and excel at a sport, a health and wellness coach can help anyone excel at living their life, even — or especially — if they have chronic medical conditions. Coaching is effective for people managing a variety of health conditions. According to a recent study, coaching “results in clinically relevant improvements in multiple biomarker risk factors (including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and cardiorespiratory fitness) in diverse populations.” Coaching has also helped improve health-related quality of life and reduced hospital admissions in patients with COPD.'

'A study led by Ruth Wolever, PhD, professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and director of Vanderbilt Health Coaching at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, found that 10 sessions of health coaching for people at risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), type 2 diabetes (T2D) or both led to increased physical activity which was sustained six months after the intervention ended.'

'Systematic reviews of health coaching in comparison to traditional care have found health coaching to:

  • significantly improve patients’ physiological, behavioural, psychological and social outcomes

  • significantly improve one or more of the behaviours of nutrition, physical activity, weight management or medication adherence

  • improve glycaemic control and reduce glycated haemoglobin for patients with type 2 diabetes

  • improve medication adherence

  • assist with weight loss and increase the levels of motivation and personal satisfaction

  • be an effective strategy to promote reductions in energy intake, body weight and body mass index

  • improve physical activity.

What is health coaching and what do coaches do?

Health coaching is a collaborative, client-centered process in which a client is guided by a coach to develop intrinsic motivation and skills to create sustainable behavioral change. Coaches engage in a process that allows clients to tap into their inner resources, develop their strengths, identify and clarify their values, discover their external allies, set and achieve goals, monitor progress, and celebrate outcomes. What is a Health Coach? - NBHWC

What is the difference between a mental health counselor, a nutritionist and a health coach?

A mental health counselor is a licensed practitioner that provides psychotherapy to treat specific psychological needs, such as childhood trauma, mental illness, or traumatic brain injury. A nutritionist is a food specialist that is licensed to prescribe specific diets and meal plans to clients according to their biological needs and goals. A health coach is a certified wellness professional who provides guidance and partnership to clients as they work toward their health and wellness goals. Health coaches elicit self-motivation to help their clients discover what they need to succeed and integrate those understandings into their lives and routines.

*Health coaches cannot provide health care, medical or nutrition therapy services, or diagnose, treat or cure any disease, condition, or other physical or mental ailment of the human body. Rather, health coaches are mentors and guides who have been trained in holistic health coaching to help clients reach their own health goals by helping clients devise and implement positive, sustainable lifestyle changes. Health coaches do not act in the capacity of a medical doctor, licensed dietician, nutritionist, or personal trainer, and any advice given by a health coach is not meant to take the place of advice by these professionals.

What can health coaching do for me that my doctor or physician cannot?

Medical doctors, naturopathic doctors, and physicians are often limited in their time and availability to meet with patients. Because of this, it is difficult for these practitioners to provide ongoing support. Unlike MDs, NDs, and physicians, health coaches are able to maintain consistent contact with clients, partnering with them and working through the details of their health and wellness journey together. Rather than focusing on a specific organ, system, or disease that other medical-focused practitioners are trained to do, health coaches are able to look at the bigger picture and explore the different areas of life that are impacting a client's overall wellness and goal achievement. Health coaches can work alongside primary care physicians to help clients implement their doctors' recommendations and elicit the self-discovery necessary for effective, long-term transformation.

Scope of Practice - NBHWC

*If you are under the care of a health care professional or currently use prescription medications, you should discuss any dietary changes or potential dietary supplements use with your health care professional, and should not discontinue any prescription medications without first consulting your health care professional. Health coaching is not a substitute for medical attention, examination, diagnosis, or treatment.
